Builder Interview

Home Information

Students from the Huot Tech Center work as professionals alongside their instructors and volunteers from the Lakes Region Builders and Remodelers Association (LRBRA). This hands-on project brings students through the process of building a home from the design and strategic planning to framing, roofing, finish work and completion—an affordable home ready to be purchased.

This 12’ x 36’ SF home is the fifth home built through this program. This home has been sold and will moving onto the homeowners pre-existing foundation. The 430SF custom built home has a slightly larger footprint than last year’s model. The home includes many amenities including: Radiant heat, refrigerator, gas range, washer/dryer and microwave. It would make a perfect cabin for hunting or snowmobiling, a small starter home for a young couple or an in-law home—perfect for a homeowner who may already have land. Additionally, it is expansive ready, should the homeowner wish to add a 3 season room.

Huot instructors make sure that the build provides optimal learning opportunities for all of the students. The students from Building Construction and HVAC classes are already working on the new 2023 home (TH-6). This home will look very similar to TH-5 and will also be available for sale.

The Lakes Region Builders & Remodelers Association (LRBRA) is proud to partner with the Huot Technical Center and industry professionals on one of the region’s most impactful workforce development initiatives - the Huot House program.

Each year, students in Huot Technical Center’s Building Construction and Plumbing & Heating programs work alongside LRBRA members to construct a fully functional Modular Home (Accessory Dwelling Unit, Tiny Home, etc.) from start to finish. Now in its ninth build, the program provides students with invaluable hands-on experience, allowing them to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting while developing the technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and professional standards required in today’s construction industry. The Huot Technical Center is now a Certified Modular Builder.

Throughout the school year, students participate in every phase of the build, including framing, insulation, window installation, flooring, cabinetry, trim work, painting, plumbing, and finish work. Guided by experienced instructors and industry professionals, they also gain exposure to career opportunities, apprenticeships, and scholarships while building connections with local trade experts.

Constructed inside the school's construction shop, each Tiny Home is built to current building codes and designed to be energy efficient. The success of the Huot House program has energized the construction and plumbing programs while helping shape students' career paths and inspire the next generation of skilled trade professionals.

As part of LRBRA’s ongoing commitment to workforce development, the association continues to support this meaningful initiative and the students who make it possible. For more information about getting involved or purchasing a future home, please contact LRBRA.
