What started as a kitchen renovation soon expanded into a complete remodel of the main living area, however the primary emphasis was the kitchen area and its functionality. The kitchen aspect was created by a vision that the designer Sandy Curtis of Sandra Curtis Design had for this small awkward space with high ceilings. The whole area was compact, crowded and lacked space. One side of the kitchen opened into a narrow opening for the dining area while the other end opened into an even more constricted end towards the living room and foyer. The home has a beautiful view to the lake but was restricted by cabinets hanging in the way of the view. So first things first - tear out of the existing walls, reframing and widening of all points of entry and pushing out a wall to gain kitchen space and picking up 33 additional square feet. Once the framing and drywall was done, Sandra Curtis Design and Custance Brothers Woodworking went to work.
Sandy drafted the space in SketchUp first and the design evolved incorporating the wishes of the homeowners. The homeowner - had a color scheme that they wanted to put into play. Black countertops and or Black Walnut, light grey cabinets and character grade white oak flooring with a subtle white tint and a soft natural finish.
Custance Brothers Woodworking took Sandy’s vision and executed it with great care, perfecting it and working through the finishing details. Every nook and cranny in the kitchen was utilized. On the living room side, a wet bar was added providing ample space for storing glassware, etc. Other elements in the space were updated like light fixtures, stairway railings, window blinds and paint finishes inspired by the homeowner’s favorite color. Unifying the entire kitchen, dining and living room area is a beautiful new hardwood floor by Ponders Hollow Custom Wood Flooring.
